The second most concern with people in India is hair loss, first being job loss. People as young as 20 are witnessing hair loss, receding hairlines, and even balding.

A scalp roughly has one lakh hairs. It is normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. It is a negligible loss. New hair grows from the hair follicle which loses the hair. However, when this natural replacement does not occur, it is time to raise the alarm. Now you will have to consult a dermatologist or a hair expert who would ascertain the cause of this hair loss and suggest an appropriate therapy.

There may be several causes of hair loss. A family history of baldness, hormonal changes, menopause, thyroid, ringworm, depression, stress or even a diet with inadequate iron and protein.

Check with your dermatologist, are you providing sufficient nourishment to your scalp? There are several hair oils and serums available, each specifically blended for your hair type. Your shampoo also may be the culprit. Switch over to chemical-free herbal variants. A tight hairdo like a braid, ponytail or a bun which exert pressure on the hair roots must be avoided. Start consuming a balanced diet with good amount of iron and protein. Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo, every alternate days. Hair must be dried with a soft towel, hot blowing for drying can be harmful.

All said and done, every case is different. What worked for your cousin, might not necessarily work for you. Always consult a hair expert and judiciously decide what is good for your case. Let’s start taking care of what we have now, rather than repent when it’s gone. What can be nourished with hundreds today, will take lakhs to revive later.
